How Self-Employed Health Insurance Works

You buy the same marketplace plans as anyone without job-based coverage. The difference is how you count your income.

Your premium tax credit is based on your household's expected income for the year. For self-employed people, that's net profit after business expenses, not gross sales. Only the people on your tax return count as your household.

An income that swings from month to month makes the estimate harder, and extra credit has to be paid back when you file. Check the 2027 tax credit income limits.

Have These Ready

  • Last Year's Tax Return or Schedule C
  • Your Expected 2027 Net Profit
  • Any Other Household Income
  • Job-Based Coverage Offered to Your Spouse
  • Your Doctors and Prescriptions

Three Ways Self-Employed People Lower Health Costs

  • Premium Tax Credit

Paid in advance straight to your insurance company each month, so your bill is lower from the start.

  • Self-Employed Health Insurance Deduction

Self-employed people can generally deduct the premiums they pay for themselves, a spouse and dependents.

  • HSA With a Bronze Plan

Since 2026, marketplace bronze plans work with a health savings account, so you pay for care with pre-tax money. Our HSA vs FSA guide has the 2027 limits.

What Business Owners Say

Before Beyond Health: panic, dread, uncertainty about what was happening with my new business insurance needs. After Beyond Health: calm, cool, collected, in control and informed… I would have made a bunch of sub-optimal decisions without this team's help.

Mike C.

I've had a fantastic experience using Beyond Health Consulting as our health insurance guide, both for individual plans through the marketplace and also for getting our small business employer plans. Colleen really knows her stuff and she's generous with her knowledge… She's also just saved us so much money over the last 18 months from guiding us to good health insurance plans.

Michelle K.Next Phase Media

Beyond Health has been a great help, guiding me through the complex world of comparing and setting up different insurance plans and options. My agent, Colleen, especially provides easy to understand communication and clearly cares about my case.

Self-Employed Health Insurance FAQ

How Much Is Health Insurance for Self-Employed People?

It depends on your age, zip code and household size, and on the premium tax credit your net income qualifies you for.

Can I Deduct Health Insurance If I'm Self-Employed?

Usually, as long as your business shows a net profit and you weren't eligible for an employer plan through another job or a spouse's job. How the deduction combines with a tax credit gets technical, so confirm the details with your tax professional.

Can Gig Workers and 1099 Contractors Get Health Insurance?

Yes. Contractors and gig workers buy a marketplace plan like any self-employed person. If you also have a part-time job that offers coverage, we check whether that offer affects your tax credit.

Can I Enroll Outside Open Enrollment When I Start My Business?

Only if you lose coverage. Leaving a job and its health plan opens a special enrollment period, but starting a business by itself doesn't. See how a special enrollment period works.

Should I Pair a Bronze Plan With an HSA?

It can fit if you're healthy and rarely need care. The trade-off is a higher deductible, so we compare it with silver and gold plans on your total yearly cost.

How Do I Estimate My Income If My Work Is Seasonal?

Start from last year's net profit, then adjust for the clients and contracts you expect. If the year turns out different, update your application so your tax credit follows. If your income is low, we also check whether Medicaid fits better.
