Health Insurance When You Don't Have a Job-Based Plan

Marketplace plans, also called ACA or Obamacare plans, are for anyone who buys coverage on their own. We help with every kind of household.

  • Individuals and Couples Without Job-Based Coverage
  • Families With Children and Young Adults
  • Early Retirees Not Yet on Medicare
  • Workers Whose Job Offers No Health Plan
  • People Between Jobs or Starting a Business

Individual Health Insurance Plans by Metal Level

Every metal level covers the same essential benefits. What changes is how you split the cost between the monthly premium and the bills when you get care.

  • Bronze Plans

The lowest monthly premium and the highest deductible. A fit if you rarely see a doctor and want protection from big bills. Bronze plans also work with a health savings account.

  • Silver Plans

Middle-of-the-road premiums and costs. Silver is the only level with cost-sharing reductions, so it is often the best value when your income qualifies.

  • Gold Plans

A higher premium with a lower deductible and copays. Often the better buy if you see doctors often or fill prescriptions every month.

  • Catastrophic Plans

A low premium and a very high deductible, with preventive care covered. Open to people under 30 and some who qualify for a hardship exemption. Tax credits can't be used on them.

Premium Tax Credits and Cost-Sharing Reductions

Three programs lower what you pay for marketplace coverage. The 2027 tax credit rules are stricter than the last few years, so the details matter.

  • Premium Tax Credit

Lowers your monthly premium based on your expected 2027 household income and the people on your tax return. It's paid straight to the insurance company, and you can put it toward a bronze, silver or gold plan.

  • Cost-Sharing Reductions

If your income qualifies, silver plans come with a lower deductible, lower copays and a lower out-of-pocket limit. You only get them by choosing a silver plan through the marketplace.

  • Medicaid and CHIP

If your household qualifies for Medicaid, or your children for CHIP, that coverage takes the place of a tax credit. We check this first, so you apply for the right program.

Check Your Network and Drug List Before You Choose

The cheapest plan isn't a bargain if your doctor is out of network or your medication costs more.

An HMO usually covers only in-network care and may need a referral for a specialist. An EPO also stays in network, often without referrals. A PPO costs more but pays part of the bill when you see doctors outside the network.

  • Your Prescriptions on the Plan's Drug List
  • Deductible, Copays and Out-of-Pocket Maximum
  • Your Total Yearly Cost, Not Just the Premium

Beyond Health has been a great help, guiding me through the complex world of comparing and setting up different insurance plans and options. My agent, Colleen, especially provides easy to understand communication and clearly cares about my case.

The agent helped me understand my health care so I felt empowered making informed decisions. I've referred several people to them and will continue to do so.

Individual Health Insurance FAQ

How Much Does Individual Health Insurance Cost?

It depends on your age, zip code, household size, tobacco use, income and the plan you pick. Many people pay far less than the listed price because of a premium tax credit. We show you real 2027 prices with your credit applied.

What Is the Difference Between Individual and Family Health Insurance?

They're the same plans. A family plan puts a spouse or dependents on one policy, with one family deductible and one family out-of-pocket limit.

Can My Kids Stay on My Family Health Insurance Until 26?

Yes. Children can stay on a parent's plan until they turn 26, even if they're married, in school or living on their own.

Is an Indemnity Plan the Same as ACA Health Insurance?

No. Marketplace plans must cover pre-existing conditions, can't cap what they pay for covered care over your lifetime and cover preventive care at no cost. Indemnity plans vary, many skip those protections, and tax credits can't be used on them.
